Ténèbre — tenebrous — is the quality of darkness used by the Baroque painters who understood that shadow was not nothing but something: a presence in a painting equal to the light, a darkness with material quality, with the ability to make what it surrounds more luminous by comparison. It is the black of Caravaggio — the black from which the light emerges rather than the black that the light leaves behind. In the fifth and final black net, this quality of meaningful shadow is the subject of the construction.
The Ténèbre is the deepest and most contemplative black in the COOQ Net Collection — a mesh worked at the maximum thread weight available in the net range, in which the black thread is heavy enough to dominate the negative space of the weave, making the mesh read as mostly black with small openings of light rather than equal parts thread and air. A reversal of the usual net relationship. The darkness that makes the light visible by containing it.
